Federal District Court Judge W. Arthur Garrity spends a night in the Charles Street Jail.

Appalled by corroded toilets, decaying walls, inadequate heating, and double occupancy of cells, he calls the jail “a violation of constitutional rights” and orders that no future inmates be sentenced there on July 20, 1973. But the facility remains open until it is replaced by the current jail (sixth) on Nashua Street in 1990.*
